The island of Bali will be celebrating Hari Raya Nyepi on Tuesday with a day of silence and reflection. Residents – both Hindu and non-Hindu spend the day indoors, and refrain from using lights, TVs, radios, computers, etc. This unique holiday is also the beginning of an eco series here on our blog. In 2012, carbon emissions (CO2) were reduced by 30000 tons during the single day cessation of activity on the island. As we approach the world-wide “Earth Hour” on March 23rd, Nyepi can serve as an example – both morally and practically – for decreasing human impact on our fragile planet.
